Environment
Hanson is committed to high environmental standards and we demonstrate our responsibilities in many ways: how we run our business, develop new products, manage and restore our sites and communicate with the local community.
Hanson seeks to manage environmental issues and the impact of our activities. Our environmental policy includes commitments to review the performance of every site on a regular basis, to reduce the potential impact of our activities and to prevent pollution.
We take pride in what we do and we go beyond what is required by legislation to protect and preserve the landscape.
To ensure high standards, Hanson maintains a documented environmental management system encompassing all its activities. The system is written in accordance with ISO 14001 - the international standard for environmental management systems. It ensures all employees with environmental responsibilities know what is required of them and are achieving the necessary standards. We take our responsibilities seriously because we value our long-term relationships with the communities and the environment in areas where we live and work.

Turning a disused quarry to good use
Wollert Landfill is located within a site that has been a commercial quarry site since the late 1960s. The development of the landfill was seen as a viable method of progressively rehabilitating the quarry. The Wollert Landfill is the primary landfill disposal site for the surrounding six municipal councils and will soon become the only major landfill in the north of Melbourne.
Water – a valuable resource
Hanson is addressing its water usage responsibility. The company is committed to ensuring new plants are built with maximum water-saving capacity. The star of Hanson's water conservation program is the newly-constructed Maroochydore concrete plant. Through a series of settlement pits, water is recycled and used in the concrete batching process and used to wash out concrete mixes.
The Bass Point team implements an award winning water management plan
Our Bass Point Quarry is located on the Bass Point Headland and is bordered by a park, a reserve park and an aquatic reserve. This brings the area's wildlife and community very close to the operational face of the quarry. The Bass Point Quarry adopted an approach to water management that was an award winner at the 2006 CCAA Extractive Industries Environment Awards.
Central Coast Sands implements a water management plan that benefits the quarry, the community and the environment
Our Central Coast Sands quarry is situated upstream of Mooney Dam, the smallest of the three dams supplying water to the City of Gosford. As a result, any water discharged from the quarry site will flow into Mooney Dam. The Central Coast team implemented a water management plan that conserved water and protected the downstream water supply.
