Health & Safety
Safety is one of Hanson's core values. We believe that Health and Safety is fundamental to our successful business operations.
We are committed to achieving the highest reasonably practicable standards of health, safety and welfare for our employees, contractors, customers and visitors.
Hanson has a wide range of health and safety initiatives and programs through our operations.
To prevent injuries and other incidents, we:
- train our employees to work safely and to eliminate the causes of unsafe behaviour;
- seek to provide safe systems of work and to encourage a safety culture continually striving for improved safety performance;
- look to adopt best practice and to commit to industry improvement initiatives and targets.
We place considerable emphasis on the need to avoid risky behaviour. We also encourage employees to look out for both themselves and their work mates to generate an inter-dependent safety culture.

Kulnura reduces risk with new safety barrier
A problem facing all drill and blast type operations is the risk associated with the height of bench faces and the potential of someone falling. The typical face height at Kulnura quarry is 12 metres. The team at Kulnura developed a fabricated barrier to be placed 1 metre from the bench face to reduce the potential of a serious accident occurring.
North East Victoria sets a safety example
On a number of our customers' sites, star pickets do not have protective caps. This is a safety concern as there is a risk of drivers walking into the star pickets. To avoid injury, it was decided that Hanson would purchase star picket cas and place these in the drivers' trucks as well as keep spares at the plants. The first driver on site will place the caps on the star pickets.
Hanson wins the Institute of Quarrying, Gold Hat Safety Award
In 1999, Hanson experienced a near fatality at a Melbourne concrete plant when a runaway truck pinned an employee against a concrete wall. The investigation found that the park-brake was not correctly applied. A device to avoid this problem happening in the future was developed.
